What is abdominal bloating?

Abdominal bloating is a feeling of pressure or fullness in your stomach and lower abdomen. Bloating may or may not occur together with a visibly swollen abdomen (distension). Though bloating is most due to gas, it can also develop if you have a buildup of fluids.

What causes abdominal bloating?

You could become bloated after eating too fast or consuming too much food. You’re also likely to feel bloated after eating gas-producing foods like beans, cabbage, cauliflower, and bran cereal.

Abdominal bloating can also occur because of:

  • Constipation
  • Carbohydrate malabsorption
  • Food intolerance or sensitivity
  • Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
  • Functional dyspepsia
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Stomach and intestinal inflammation
  • Imbalanced gut bacteria
  • Motility disorders (slow movement in the gastrointestinal tract)
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Liver disease
  • Peptic ulcers

Women may become bloated due to hormonal changes during their periods and before menopause. Hormones can cause extra gas and water retention.

What symptoms might I have with abdominal bloating?

Bloating can feel mildly uncomfortable or cause severe pain, depending on the cause and severity of the problem. You may also have other gas-related symptoms, such as burping and passing gas (flatulence).

You may have other symptoms when your abdominal bloating is caused by an underlying health condition, including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Cramping
  • Heartburn

You should consult the Premier Gastro Care team when your symptoms last longer than a week, get progressively worse, or you have a fever, vomiting, or bleeding.

How is abdominal bloating treated?

Your Premier Gastro Care provider learns about your symptoms, diet, bowel movement habits, and medical history. They run diagnostic tests as needed to get to the root cause of your bloating. For example, they may do blood work, breath testing, an upper endoscopy, or abdominal imaging.

Your treatment is customized to target the cause of your bloating and could include many possible approaches. A few examples include:

  • Taking antacids or an acid blocker
  • Increasing dietary fiber and water
  • Following a special diet
  • Taking laxatives
  • Taking prescription medications

You may need a surgical procedure to treat problems like a bowel blockage or liver disease.
