What does gastric motility mean?

Gastric motility is a term that describes contractions of the stomach muscles that start the digestive process and propel the food into the small intestine.

The stomach has two regions that support gastric motility.

Upper stomach

The contractions in the upper stomach create the pressure that helps move food from the stomach into the small intestine.

Lower stomach

The muscle contractions in the lower stomach grind, mix, and liquefy food into a substance called chyme.

Changes in muscle movement in the upper or lower stomach may affect digestion.

I always feel bloated. Do I have a problem with gastric motility?

Bloating, abdominal pain, and always feeling full are some of the symptoms you may experience if you have a problem with gastric motility. Examples of conditions that affect gastric motility include:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

GERD is a chronic condition that causes heartburn and indigestion. It occurs when the contents of your stomach reflux up into the esophagus. Slow gastric emptying may play a role in the development of GERD.

Dumping syndrome

Dumping syndrome is when the contents from the stomach move rapidly through the stomach into the small intestine. Because the food isn’t properly digested, it then moves quickly through the small and large intestines, causing diarrhea.

Gastroparesis

Gastroparesis is a condition in which the muscle contractions in the stomach are weak or slow, delaying or stalling the movement of food through the stomach.

Schedule a consultation at Premier Gastro Care if you have chronic indigestion, abdominal pain, or a change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea).

What happens during an evaluation for gastric motility?

The team at Premier Gastro Care conducts a thorough evaluation when you come in with symptoms that suggest problems with gastric motility. They ask detailed questions about your symptoms, perform a physical exam, and may run various tests to confirm or rule out the cause of your symptoms.

Testing may include:

  • Bloodwork
  • Stool test
  • Breath test (test for carbohydrate malabsorption)
  • X-rays
  • Endoscopy (upper endoscopy of capsule endoscopy)
  • Colonoscopy

The team talks to you about the testing you need and how they can determine your diagnosis.

What treatments can improve gastric motility?

Treatment for problems with gastric motility depends on the underlying cause and your symptoms. Your plan may include diet changes, disease-specific medication, or medications that improve gastric emptying or gastrointestinal motility.
